Here is the first step to guide you on how to install WordPress on your laptop or PC.
In this post, we are going to look how to install and configure MAMP in your laptop and PC. As you know, WordPress needs a server environment.
There are many around like LAMP, XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP. Today, I’m going to talk about MAMP. It is a free and open source cross-platform web server, so you can use it in Mac and Windows.
With MAMP you can create a server within our local PC. To make this possible, you’re going to download and install it. After installing WordPress in our local PC, you can test or learn WordPress, without opting for free or paid hosting.
MAMP provides the necessary server environment in our local PC, which WordPress needs to run. First, I’m going to guide you, how to install MAMP in your computer. The installation procedure will be same in every platform such as Mac and Windows. That’s why I’m going to demonstrate only in Windows.
To download MAMP, go to mamp.info then look for Download button you can download as per your platform. For example, if you’re using Windows then download MAMP for Windows. If you see any warnings about installing the software just skip or ignore them because MAMP is absolutely safe, so you can just proceed with installation.
In the next step, you will be asked, what are the components you wish to install the options are Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.. You can install all the components, but the essential components to run WordPress are Apache, FTP, PHP and phpMyAdmin. Once you have selected these options, just click next. I recommend you to leave the installation folder as it is but if your target folder is not empty, then rename it or select a new target location.
In this guide we are going to install WordPress manually. You’re almost there just click next to start installing. Once installed, you will be asked whether to start control panel leave the option checked then click finish to open the control panel. If you get any other warning from your firewall or antivirus software or another security software, allow the access for MAMP.
Once the installation is over, MAMP control panel will be opened, you need to start both Apache and MySQL. If your installation has got completed without any error, these two should start without any problems. If you want to check whether the server environment in your local PC is ready, just go to http://localhost but before installing WordPress, you should set up MySQL database lets see that in the next post.
